The winter season is a great time to get active and enjoy the outdoors, but it's important to take precautions to stay safe and warm. Here are some tips from our sports injury clinic in Markham on how to exercise safely in winter:

Dress in layers: Wear loose, breathable layers that you can easily add or remove as needed. Start with a base layer of synthetic material (such as polyester or nylon) to wick away sweat, followed by a middle layer of insulation (such as fleece), and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.

Wear proper footwear: Invest in a good pair of winter boots or shoes with traction to prevent slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Protect your extremities: Don't forget to wear gloves, a hat, and a scarf to protect your hands, head, and neck from the cold.

Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after exercise to avoid dehydration.

Try not to let yourself get too sweaty, as this can make you more susceptible to hypothermia. If possible, wear moisture-wicking materials next to your skin.

Listen to your body: If you start to feel too cold or uncomfortable, head indoors or call it a day. It's not worth risking your health for a workout!

Following these tips will help you stay safe and enjoy your winter workouts. If previous injuries are holding you back our team would be happy to help get you back on track. Contact us for more information. Stay warm out there!
